Three Cliffs Bay

Three Cliffs Bay, Gower
Three Cliffs Bay, Gower
Three Cliffs Bay is one of the most photographed beaches in the UK, and was a finalist in the BBC TV series “Britain’s Favourite View” having been presented by the talented Katherine Jenkins.   It is a truly magnificent bay which will please everyone as it incorporates valley, countryside, river, wildlife, history and of course the sandy beach itself.

Leaving Shepherds shop and travelling by foot through the woods opposite, as you reach the top of the incline you have a choice to make.  Turning left will take you up over the golf course and along the edge of the hills, so looking down on to the valley below and the beaches beyond.  Carrying on along the path, and exiting the woods into the valley you will stroll along the meandering river, over the wooden boardwalk and salt marshes before stumbling over the pebbles to find the glorious beach in front of you.

Pobbles Bay
Pobbles Bay is a hidden part of Three Cliffs Bay which can be easily accessed at low tide by simply walking around the Three Cliffs themselves.  When the tide is in, Pobbles can be reached by walking along footpaths and boardwalks on the top of the cliffs, or from Brunswick Drive near Pennard Golf Club.

Pennard Castle

Pennard Castle
Pennard Castle
Pennard Castle, built around the 13th Cenury, overlooks Three Cliffs valley and the Bay beyond.  It's commanding position ultimately led to its downfall as it was engulfed in sand and abandoned in the early 1400's, along with the village which had grown around it.  The ruin of St Mary's church alongside the Castle can still be seen and remained in use until 1532.

It is surrounded by mystery, myth and legend.  One story says that the castle was built overnight by a sorcerer, trying to save himself from certain death by the Normans.  Another says the Castle is haunted by the ghost of an old winged witch who bewitches anyone who sleeps there overnight.  The most popular myth is that the Castle was in jubilant mood with the pending marriage of Prince Rhys ap Iestyn, when, after having too much to drink, he insulted the Tylwyth Teg people who were "making merriment" outside the Castle.  They then cast a spell on the Castle and a huge sandstorm blew up, engulfing the Castle and forcing the inhabitants to flee.

Oxwich Bay

Travelling further into Gower you will come across an ancient "gate house" where there is a turning to Oxwich.  The views as you decend the hill and travel along the salt marshes are beautiful.  Oxwich village has some lovely thatched cottages along its narrow roads, but the biggest draw is the beach itself.  Oxwich Bay is a vast expanse of sand, bordered by sand dunes and a National Nature Reserve, and has a large car park bordering the beach.  Boats can be launched from Oxwich and kite flying, windsurfing and jet skiing are popular activites.
