Pennard Castle, built around the 13th Cenury, overlooks Three Cliffs valley and the Bay beyond.  It's commanding position ultimately led to its downfall as it was engulfed in sand and abandoned in the early 1400's, along with the village which had grown around it.  The ruin of St Mary's church alongside the Castle can still be seen and remained in use until 1532.

It is surrounded by mystery, myth and legend.  One story says that the castle was built overnight by a sorcerer, trying to save himself from certain death by the Normans.  Another says the Castle is haunted by the ghost of an old winged witch who bewitches anyone who sleeps there overnight.  The most popular myth is that the Castle was in jubilant mood with the pending marriage of Prince Rhys ap Iestyn, when, after having too much to drink, he insulted the Tylwyth Teg people who were "making merriment" outside the Castle.  They then cast a spell on the Castle and a huge sandstorm blew up, engulfing the Castle and forcing the inhabitants to flee.
